Nothing Basic About Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL Training
Basic Underwater Demolition/SEAL Training (BUD/S) is one of the most grueling and demanding training programs in the U.S. military, designed to prepare candidates for the rigors of Navy SEAL operations. Held at the Naval Special Warfare Center in Coronado, California, BUD/S is a six-month program that tests the physical, mental, and emotional fortitude of the trainees. The program is divided into three phases: Basic Conditioning, Diving, and Land Warfare. Each phase is progressively more challenging than the last and essential for developing the skillset and resilience required to be a SEAL.
The first phase, Basic Conditioning, lasts seven weeks and is notorious for its intensity. This phase includes rigorous physical training, long-distance running, swimming, and calisthenics, combined with obstacle courses and countless hours of physical and mental stress strategically induced. One of the most infamous parts of this phase is “Hell Week,” a five-and-a-half-day period of continuous physical and mental exertion with very little sleep. Hell Week is designed to sift out those who lack the determination and stamina to continue, pushing candidates to their absolute limits.
The second phase, Diving, focuses on combat diving and underwater operations, teaching trainees how to conduct underwater reconnaissance and demolition missions. This phase emphasizes both open-circuit (SCUBA) and closed-circuit (rebreather) diving. It includes rigorous training in underwater navigation, dive physics, and dive medicine. The skills learned during this phase are imperative for conducting the clandestine operations SEALs are known for, moving undetected in hostile environments.
The third and final phase, Land Warfare, trains candidates in small unit tactics, land navigation, patrolling, rappelling, marksmanship, and explosives handling. This phase is executed in various terrains and conditions, including desert, mountain, and urban environments. Candidates learn to conduct raids, ambushes, and reconnaissance missions, honing the tactical skills necessary for SEAL operations. Throughout BUD/S, candidates are constantly evaluated. Only those who demonstrate exceptional physical endurance, mental toughness, and a commitment to teamwork will graduate and move on to further specialized SEAL training. BUD/S serves as the ultimate crucible, ensuring that only the most capable and resilient individuals earn their Trident.
